Preserving Marysville History: The Craft Behind the Hard Times B-B-Q Sign

At Visual Impact Signs, we love taking on projects that bridge local history with smart structural engineering. When Hard Times B-B-Q set up shop at 427 J Street in Marysville, we had the privilege of designing and building their main rooftop sign.
A High-Visibility Corner with Rich History
Located right at the gateway into Marysville from Yuba City across the 5th Street Bridge, 427 J Street sits on a prime commercial corner. Over 34,500 vehicles pass this spot daily.
Before opening as Hard Times B-B-Q, this building spent decades as a recognizable local spot.
Originally built in 1938, the location housed The Alibi, co-owned by Mrs. Eugenie J. Watry in the 1980s. It operated as a licensed five-table card room from 1981 to 1993, with the bar remaining active into the late 2000s.
After standing vacant for years, the corner was remodeled and brought back to life, giving Hard Times B-B-Q a home to serve low-and-slow smoked briskets to the Yuba-Sutter community.
Solving the Structural Sign Challenge
Since 427 J Street sits in the Marysville Historic District, getting a custom sign approved required careful coordination with the City of Marysville Architectural Review Board. Historic district rules call for signs that fit traditional character, but structural limitations required an inventive approach.
Faux-Rust Aluminum: Solid Corten rusted steel plates would have exceeded the structural weight limits of the roof mount and cabinet frame. We solved this by using two 1/8-inch aluminum panels treated with a stained faux-rust finish. This technique replicated the heavy, weathered look required by historic guidelines without putting unnecessary stress on the roof.
Dimensional Metal Lettering: For sharp contrast, we cut 3/16-inch aluminum letters with a brushed finish and mounted them with 1.5-inch stand-offs.
Targeted Exterior Lighting: Instead of standard internal sign cabinet lights, directional LED floodlights were mounted to illuminate the sign face from below, highlighting the metallic texture and dimensional lettering.
"RIBS MAKE ANY DAY BETTER!" — A tagline permanently crafted into the face of the sign, welcoming thousands of drivers daily as they cross into Marysville.
